Emissions of virgin refrigerant HCFC gases into our atmosphere have been proven to cause a depletion of the earth's ozone layer, which is the protective layer in our Earth's atmosphere that absorbs 98% of the Sun's ultraviolet light, which is harmful to life on Earth. Under the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, it has been illegal since January 1st 2010 for vessels with EU-flag to top-up a refrigeration system using virgin HCFC refrigerants - R12 and R22 are the most commonly used. Only reclaimed R12 R22 can be used within EU and on EU-flagged vessels until January 1st 2015, at which point all HVAC & Refrigeration systems must use alternative approved non-ozone-depleting refrigerants (R134a, R407c, R404a and R417a). This means that equipment operating with R12 or R22 will either need to be replaced or retrofitted to a Non-Ozone-Depleting Refrigerant.
